Satellite-based localisation and its aspects of certification for safe use in rail transport

Satellite-based localisation systems (GNSS) and their augmentation systems (SBAS) have become widespread in various transportation domains and in other areas. Their use in non-safety relevant and safety relevant applications in the railways would therefore seem to make sense. Technical and economically efficient operations especially present a challenge on low traffic lines, where the European Train Control System (ETCS) will probably not be introduced in the short or medium term.
