ETCS/ETCS L2 migration in Austria / ETCS Level 2 VSS

The history of the European Train Control System (ETCS) at ÖBB-Infrastruktur started long ago. It was subjected to intensive study by the Austrian Railways’ infrastructure company at the very outset of ETCS. The Supervisory Board took the decision to introduce ETCS in 2001: at that time this involved the “ETCS L1 Full Supervision” version. In 2004, a pilot was realised from Vienna to and beyond the Hungarian border, whereafter it was operated in Hungary by M agyar Államvasutak (M ÁV) . For the very first time, it was possible to show that a cross-border train control system could be implemented in cross-border operations instead of national solutions....
