Quantum based security in rail transport – beginning of a new era

A long-term approach to railway telecommunication infrastructure cybersecurity is required due to its increasing susceptibility to classical encryption and hash algorithms used in future quantum computer attacks. The development of quantum technologies poses a challenge to the security of modern communication systems, including those used in rail transport. The GSM-R system and FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) rely on cryptography [3] that could easily soon become vulnerable. Funkwerk Systems has already investigated the hackability of encrypted GSM-R transmissions in conjunction with the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam....
