Bombardier is well known in the rail industry in the Netherlands: having supplied rolling stock in the guises of Talbot and Adtranz, Bombardier continues to deliver bi-level passenger cars and refurbished multiple units to NS-Reizigers. Less is heard of Bombardier’s signalling activities here. In addition to its selection as a supplier of EBI Switch in-sleeper point drives, Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions currently holds two signalling contracts with Dutch infrastructure authority ProRail. The first, signed in 1999, is a development contract covering the adaptation of Bombardier’s INTERFLO* solution for integrated computer-based signalling systems (with the ProRail working name CBSS) to meet ProRail’s „Beveiliging 21“ requirements for new-generation safety systems. It includes supply and installation of equipment for trials on a Pilot Line. The second, signed in 2003, is for the supply and installation of INTERFLO 350, including ERTMS/ETCS Level 2, on the Amsterdam–Utrecht four-track expansion project. ProRail’s Steenwijk–Heerenveen line was selected as the Pilot Line for Bombardier’s system. Bombardier INTERFLO includes all the key elements of infrastructure control – interlocking, wayside object interfaces, radio block and safe data transmission. The system will comply with the European Train Control System (ETCS) technical specifications for interoperability (TSIs), supporting the unrestricted international movement of trains and helping rail to contribute to sustainable mobility in the 21st Century.
