Gyeongchoon Line – from a commuter to a high-speed line with ETCS

September 2011 | Florian Hutter, Manfred Zekl

In the first of its so-called upgrade projects, the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) is equipping the Gyeongchoon Line – a section of track extending around 81 km to the north-west of Seoul mainly serving as a commuter line to the capital – with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1. Within the consortium with Korean partner companies, Thales Austria is supplying the trackside equipment. A tight project schedule and strict quality requirements imposed by the customer represent major challenges in this project, which is currently being implemented.
