Automatic Train Operation (ATO) is considered an essential prerequisite for increasing productivity in rail transport. The proposed benefits include more efficient utilisation of the rail infrastructure, reduced energy consumption and emissions and, last but not least, a response to the shortage of skilled workers. Freight transport automation is being researched in the ATO-Cargo (Automatic Train Operation Technologies for Cargo) project using a prototype implementation [1].
