ARTE: Testing ATO GoA 3/4 and RTO on a non-ETCS line
A diesel multiple unit was equipped for driverless operations (ATO GoA 3/4) with signal detection and remote train operation (RTO) as part of the ARTE project. A tablet computer was used as the remote-control device and the train was tested on lines without any ETCS (European Train Control System). There, it served as a real-world laboratory for researching the operating aspects, human factors and personnel roles connected with the new operating modes.
