October 2025 | Annika Dreßler, Beat Rappo, Benjamin Wyss, Duy Nguyen, Niels Brandenburger, Malte Petersen

The digitalisation and automation of rail operations have seen remote train operation (RTO) become relevant as a technical solution alongside automatic train operation (ATO). In 2024, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) carried out a pilot test in which a prototype RTO system was tested for use in shunting operations [1]. This included an analysis of the human-technology interaction [2] carried out by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), into which we provide insights here.
