Performance monitoring for level crossing protection systems
It is not uncommon for level crossing protection systems (LCPS) to remain in operation for 40 years or more. Rail transportation changes over such long periods and this can lead to erroneous system behaviour. It is now apparent that increased traffic volumes involving a wide range of rail transport companies operating vehicles not previously used are giving rise to specific faults in level crossing protection systems. Changes intended to reduce fuel consumption, for example, are modifying train braking and start-up behaviour in ways that were not foreseen when the level crossing protection systems were being planned....
