Dear Readers, On 7 February 2018, the leading representatives of the German SPD and CDU/CSU parties determined the operational framework for a potential future joint coalition government in a coalition contract. The rail transport chapter can be described as a “tailwind for the railway”, because the coalition contract not only includes the fundamental requirements needed to reinforce railway traffic in Germany, but also a number of other beneficial individual measures. Amongst other things, these include: 70% electrification for the German railway network by 2025, the readying of the network for 740 metre long goods trains, a digital offensive, including the installation of ETCS, and “automated driving”....
