SBB’s FSS Pilot Project – The First Application of ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 Worldwide

September 2000 | Andreas Wik, Hartmut Thies

In March 1998, the Swiss Federal Railways SBB started a pilot project named “Führerstandsignalisierung” (“FSS”) to setup a modern and efficient train control system without any trackside main and distant signals. Adtranz (Switzerland) received the order for such a system on basis of ERTMS/ETCS level 2. The paper describes the system and the components and gives the actual status of this ambitious SBB project.
