The RSR Eddy Current Brake-resistant Wheel Sensor Equipment System

September 2002 | Klaus Altehage, Peter Lau

The use of cadenced linear eddy current brakes for normal and rapid braking on high-speed trains places new demands on the electromagnetic and also electrical compatibility of intermittent train-operated track switching equipment. In response, Frauscher GmbH has developed an innovative wheel sensor designed to meet the tougher requirements due to the use of linear eddy current brakes. Numerous tests and trials conducted parallel to the development process, as well as specially tailored configurations, laid the groundwork for a speedy and efficient approval procedure at the Federal Railway Office and for practical deployment on lines used by DB AG’s ICE 3 trains using linear eddy current brakes.
