Provision of Complete Luxembourg Railway Network with ETCS Level 1

September 2003 | André Feltz, Hans Kast, Henri Werdel, Jean-Jacques Kolb

Luxembourg has a rather small railway network. Almost all its national railway lines are connected with the railway networks of the neighbouring countries. Taking this into account the Board of Administration of CFL (Chemin de Fer Luxembourgeois) decided to introduce ETCS Level 1 as national train protection system. The contract for providing the complete Luxembourg line network with ETCS Level 1 was awarded to ALCATEL. This article describes the historically grown situation, the approach adopted for preparing the customer specifications, and the chosen solution.
