The importance of a safety culture in railway signalling
This article summarises the present state of knowledge concerning the causes of accidents, discussing possible potential for improvement in the context of railway signalling. An important finding, which is also underpinned by a concrete example, is the key role of a safety culture, not merely for railway signalling, but also for the entire system of rail transport. The basic factors affecting a company’s safety culture are presented, and measures described which, from the author’s own experience, can be implemented to promote a positive safety culture.
