Full speed through the mountain – ETCS Level 2 in the Lötschberg Base Tunnel

October 2004 | Christian Hellwig, Dagmar Wander

The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is part of the Alpine Transit strategy of the Swiss Federal Government in order to transfer a significant proportion of the inner European traffic from road to rail. At 34.6 km (21.6 miles), it will be one of the longest railway tunnels in the world. Within the tunnel, the ETCS Level 2 plays a central role in train protection.
