The Transrapid Radio System

February 2005 | Jörn Schlichting, Manfred Müller

The Transrapid Radio System – hereafter referred to as the Radio System – from Telefunken Racoms, which operates in the 38 GHz frequency range, is an integral component of the Transrapid Operation Control System (OCS). The OCS ensures automatic operation of the Transrapid and integrates all the subsystems into the overall Transrapid system. The Radio System is used by all the participating subsystems for communication between the train and track. Whereas the Transrapid Operation Control System is effectively the “brain” of the Transrapid, the Radio System can be regarded as the “nervous system” of the Transrapid. The Transrapid Operation Control System for the Transrapid Shanghai project was supplied by the Rail Automation Division of Siemens Transportation Systems in Brunswick (Germany). The superb integration of the Radio System from Telefunken Racoms into the overall Transrapid system contributed in no small degree to the successful execution of the project.
