By moving block to the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing

February 2009 | Jörg Biesenack, Karsten Rahn

Beijing metro Line 10 with the Olympic Park branch of the future Line 8 was declared open for passenger operation on July 19, 2008 on schedule before the Olympic Games after a project duration of only two years and three months. In this project the Siemens train control system Trainguard MT is being used for the first time as a communication-based train control (CBTC) system with WLAN-based radio transmission. More than 800,000 passengers per day used these lines during the Olympic Games, so that from the outset almost all 40 vehicles available were in operation for the 3 to 3.5-minute interval service. The Asian operators are turning more and more to CBTC systems in which the trains travel at absolute braking distance (moving block), independently of the physical block sections. Moving block systems permit the maximum possible line throughput coupled with a minimum of trackside equipment.
