ETCS approximation by legacy ATP/ATC systems under railway operation research methods
The need to map ETCS in forms of railway operation research (ROR) such as simulation and capacity quantification rises the more widespread the system’s use becomes. Approximation by existing ATC systems such as LZB is often adopted as a means of achieving this. The quality of approximation is gauged by comparing the systems’ intrinsic properties and examining their impact on indicators of practical relevance. It is revealed that simplifications of this kind are only feasible under restrictive assumptions and that their admissibility needs to be verified in the context of the task in hand.
