Simulation as a planning tool for Helsinki railway station yard layout

October 2013 | Heidi Mäenpää, Jukka-Pekka Pitkänen, Veli-Matti Kantamaa

Problems at the Helsinki railway station yard affect railway traffic throughout Finland. Issues at this location and in Ilmala, home to Finland’s largest marshalling yard, have already generated problems in other parts of the country. In the last few years, hundreds of millions Euros have been invested in Ilmala. In order to achieve its natural extension, it has been decided to begin design work for the Helsinki railway station yard as well. In this project design, simulations and visualisations have been used to support decision making at an earlier stage than was possible before.
