Protection of ETCS and other equipment from trains with low hanging parts

February 2015 | Manfred Kaltenegger

Heavy parts that hang down from rolling stock underframes were a problem even before the increased use of Eurobalises. The importance of reliable detection of low-hanging couplings and other attachments that fall too low has greatly increased. However, with progressing automation of train traffic, incidents with massive damage, often over long distances, have shown the importance of protecting new railway trackside equipment.
