The Guadarrama-Tunnel

The 28.4 km long Guadarrama tunnel 50 km to the north of Madrid is part of the Madrid-Northwest railway line which belongs to the Madrid-Valladolid high-speed line designed for a speed of 350 km/h. The tunnel will consist of two single-track tubes with an axis distance of 30 m and cross-ways each 250 m. The tube inside diameter will be 8.50 m. The tunnel will be realized in a monocoque construction with tubbings of reinforced concret. Four double-shield tunnel drilling machines will be applied for the propulsion. The tunnel will also contain a ventilating system unique in Europe. It will be equipped with ventilating centres at both tunnel portals.
