European high-speed traffic has a great future
In 1999 nine rail systems in the European Union already generated 52.7 billion passenger kilometres (p/km) with high-speed trains, or one fifth of all rail passenger traffic (292 billion p/km). Since June 2001 over 3000 km of new track have been in use in Europe and by 2010 a total of 6000 km should be in service.
