Wayside train monitoring system – a multitask database for asset owners

November 2015 | Veli-Matti Kantamaa, Seppo Mäkitupa

In Finland, monitoring of the condition of rolling stock by means of wayside devices saw widespread adoption in the early 1990s. By that time, the number of manned stations and the headcount of staff had been reduced. This development continues, as speed and axle weights increase and rolling stock rotation is becoming more efficient. Despite the technical developments in trains, various defects and malfunctions still cause unnecessary wear and tear to the track and rolling stock. Instead of a manual observation, a variety of wayside devices are used for monitoring the characteristics of rolling stock.
