Automatic rail lubrication to counteract noise and wear

March 2015 | Frank Siedlowsky

Special pump assemblies from SKF with Mono Flex distributors are making the railway lines operated by Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) “more supple”. They apply the necessary amount of lubricant to the rails, automatically, reliably and precisely metered. The company derives clear benefits from this. The solution was originally devised for wind convertors and has now been adapted with KVB’s participation for the railway sector. It reduces the wear on both wheels and rails and thus also brings down the costs occasioned by wear. Furthermore, it cuts noise emissions, and transport by rail through the built-up parts of Cologne has become much quieter.
