New overall approach to the safety, security and cybersecurity for completely guided transport systems

March 2021 | Marek Pawlik

SIGNAL+DRAHT readers are used to Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), which have been applicable to operations control and signalling systems and devices since SIL levels were defined by the RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) standards at the end of the 20th century. However, this is no longer enough, as electronic and programmable solutions are currently supporting a much wider scope of transport related functionalities and are therefore exposed not only to failures, but also to growing numbers of hacking attempts. The described comprehensive quantitative approach based on safety security and cybersecurity Functional Integrity Levels (FIL) was first proposed for verifying the comprehensiveness of safety, security and cybersecurity measures for the railway system, but it is especially suitable for all isolated guided transport systems.
