Strengthening the railways as an environmentally friendly means of transport is an essential tool in handling the climate crisis. The general orientation for regional railways has also changed fundamentally due to increasing environmental awareness and the demand for a greater modal share for rail transport. In the last decade, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG’s regional railways were often classified as not being systemically adequate and a strategic examination was undertaken with regard to their closure.
