A needs-oriented upgrade to ETCS Level 2 at SBB Infrastructure

The Swiss Federal Office of Transport’s (FOT) new ERTMS strategy envisages a further “needs-oriented” rollout of ETCS L2. As a consequence, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has had to investigate which lines should be considered for a future upgrade to ETCS L2 (European Train Control System Level 2) . The meaning of the term “needs-oriented” has been defined more precisely and operationalised in order to achieve this. A network-wide analysis has shown where and at what point in time an upgrade to ETCS L2 can be classified as “needs-oriented” from the point of view of the rolling stock, the train control systems and the traffic requirements....
