Radio-operated Level-crossing Approach Indicators as innovative partial replacement for obstruction detection
Of the more than 10,000 protected level crossings installed in the German Railways network, the vast majority are fitted with technology that is more than 40 years old. Modernization of these crossings entails efficient utilization of available resources, which in itself is a challenge. Wherever full barriers have to be used, the road/rail intersection has to be monitored. In order to indicate the approaching trains to proceed, obstruction detectors are required. On the other hand, level crossings equipped with obstruction detectors incur considerably more costs than half-barrier level crossings....
