The potential and the development focus for distributed fibre optic sensing in the rail sector

February 2019 | John Exner, Patrick Pohl

In recent years, research into fibre optic sensing (FOS) for use in quality and availability enhancing railway applications has led to promising insights and ever shorter innovation cycles. The availability of quasi maintenance-free optical fibre offers economic advantages. In addition to this, there are also challenging development tasks in the areas of FOS, acoustics and signal processing. The potential and the focus of development are described in the following article.
