The railway sector is currently undergoing a profound transformation with the digitalisation of the trackside and onboard systems that are necessary to deliver automation, data analytics, connectivity and shared mobility. At the same time, rail is also rapidly becoming the backbone of future mobility, as it is the most energy-efficient transport mode that currently accounts for 9% of global motorised passenger movements and 7% of freight, while consuming only 3% of all used transport energy [5].
