U 5 – the new underground for Hamburg

May 2019 | Christoph Müller

In Hamburg, the planned new U 5 underground line is the newest large urban local transport project in a long time. Years of planning and two false starts for a plan approval procedure to build light rail in Hamburg mean that the city and Hamburger Hochbahn have been focusing on the construction of a completely new underground rail line for a long time. The line is to be served by automated platform doors (GoA4 grade of automation). The Nuremberg model, which has no such doors, was not even analysed.
