Automatic train operation: much more than simply driverless travel. Significant automation requires greater reliance on innovative systems and complex software. The railways will only remain competitive, if the systems and software can be easily updated with a quicker and cheaper integration and approval process. This requires a complete redesign of the railway control, command and signalling (CCS) architecture.
