ETCS as a carrier system for improved performance at S-Bahn Stuttgart
With around 435,000 passengers per day, Stuttgart S-Bahn is a success story: however, more than 800 train journeys every workday have brought its Core in particular to its limits. Since it will not be possible to finance a conventional infrastructure upgrade (a 2nd main line) and LZB will not be available until beyond 2030, the focus from 2015 onwards has been on equipping the Core with ETCS L2 (European Train Control System – Level 2). After initial studies in 2016 indicated that the ETCS would bring considerable operational benefits, DB Netz AG, M inistry of Transport for the State of Baden-Württemberg and Verband Region Stuttgart jointly commissioned a comprehensive ETCS study in 2017 for the Stuttgart S-Bahn, which was completed at the end of 2018....
