Introduction of ERTMS / ETCS from a Supplier's Point of View
The new European Train Control System ERTMS/ETCS is currently passing from the system specification phase to the test and trial phase within pilot projects supported by the EU. The first commercial installations are being prepared. Alcatel Austria has been working on the test project on the Vienna—Budapest line and is now starting its first ETCS level 1 installation on parts of the Sofia—Burgas line in Bulgaria. The status of this work, some of the problems encountered and technical solutions found during the introduction of the new system are discussed in this paper.
