ETCS: Train control from the past, the present or the future?
The balance between technology, procedures and staffing is a common characteristic of various legacy ATP systems used in Europe. The introduction of the European Train Control System (ETCS) offered a new approach to safety, automation and interoperability and has initiated a process of harmonisation and standardisation. The ETCS not only implies a change of technology, but also requires the flexible adaptation of operating procedures and operations staff. This is a lengthy process that is not yet finished....
