Dual-Mode Radio Communication Units for the Migration to GSM-R Radio Communications at DB AG

September 2001 | Harald Liesegang, Jörg Eberitsch

For years many European railways have made efforts to replace their analog radio communication systems with a uniform radio communication system. In order to replace the existing system with a new GSM-R based system without interrupting operations, two migration strategies have been worked out: complete implementation of the GSM-R network on the stationary side while continuing to operate the analog radio communication system or equipment of all tractive stock with dual-mode radio communication units, which are able to function in the analog network as well as the digital GSM-R network. Only the second strategy is possible at DB AG.
