Dear readers, The artificial intelligence (AI) is once again discussed in this issue. The discussion focuses on safety verification and the associated challenges and requirements that an AI-based system in railway engineering must fulfil in order to make autonomous safety-relevant decisions. The paper shows the dilemma of the railway industry: the current standards do not support the generation of safety cases. The parent standard IEC 61508 only considers the topic in the form “Not recommended”. This means that safety verification is hardly possible....
