Satellite-based localisation and its aspects of certification for safe use in rail transport

Satellite-based localisation systems (GNSS) and their augmentation systems (SBAS) have become widespread in various transportation domains and in other areas. Their use in non-safety relevant and safety relevant applications in the railways would therefore seem to make sense. Technical and economically efficient operations especially present a challenge on low traffic lines, where the European Train Control System (ETCS) will probably not be introduced in the short or medium term. Trains equipped with GNSS would especially enable efficient operations in this case, because no trackside equipment would be required...
