Hybrid Drive demonstrates market readiness

March 2015 | Benjamin Oszfolk, Matthias Radke, Matthias Kasch, Yvonne Ibele

Significant fuel-saving potential, clear noise reduction and the ability to operate on electrified and non-electrified routes with a single drive system. MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH ran trials with its Hybrid Drive to verify reliability and readiness for everyday operation. Result: MTU Hybrid technology is ready for the market. Although rail applications are not yet regulated by legislation in the same way as the automotive sector, hybrid drives for rail vehicles are already an attractive proposition. On local routes in particular, hybrid drives offer considerable potential for increasing economic efficiency and reducing emissions. In pure electric drive mode especially, hybrid technology makes emission-free localized travel possible in urban areas, underground stations and tunnels. In addition, the combination of electric drive and diesel power facilitates on-time train travel and makes it easier to make up for delays.
