ETCS retrofits at national borders using the example of Görlitz–Zgorzelec
The nationally influenced development of the railway system in Europe make track retrofits and operations in cross-border sections complex. As a standardised system, ETCS offers the simplification of interoperable traffic. However, practice has shown that there are many possible combinations of technical trackside equipment variants. The scope for solutions is limited by the country-specific retrofit and vehicle strategies. At the same time, special legal regulations (at least in Germany) pertaining to cross-border sections also allow the use of approved technology from neighbouring countries...
