ETCS planning on the 1st and 2nd “Stammstrecke” at the Munich S-Bahn

With its two-minute headway during rush hour, the Munich S-Bahn main line (German: “Stammstrecke”, SBSS) has one of the shortest headways in the world. A planning foundation therefore had to be established for the planned introduction of E uropean Train Control System ( ETCS) into this area. It had to be proven that at least 30 trains per hour could operate in each direction on the existing S-Bahn main line (the 1st SBSS) and the future 2nd SBSS (fig. 1).
