An automatic shunting pilot project – the future of shunting

Automation has been an important issue in rail transport for many years now, with automatic train operation offering enormous potential, particularly where shunting is concerned. Automation makes depots and yards more flexible, efficient and cost-effective. DB Systel is trialling automatic shunting as part of a pilot project in which a road-rail vehicle receives motion commands from a dispatch system and shunts the cars accordingly. It is not only necessary to take the vehicles, the dispatching and the infrastructure into account, but also the safety and security issues, as well as the way that all the different elements communicate with one another...
