Dear readers, rail freight traffic is supposed to increase by 50% EU-wide by 2030 and then double by 2050. The EU has set out this goal in its “Strategy for Sustainable and Intelligent Mobility”. A significant increase in the efficiency of road freight traffic in the last 50 years has meant that rail freight has been unable to improve its current competitive position, contrary to the traffic policy targets. In the meantime, it has also become apparent that the goal of significantly increasing the market share of goods traffic on the rails cannot be achieved without an enormous increase in rail freight traffic efficiency....
