The standardisation of Europe an signalling systems, within the framework of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and in accordance with the „Council Directive 96/48/EC of 23 rd July 1996 on the Interoperability of the Trans-European Highspeed Rail System“, which aims at standardised crossborder traffic, can now be concluded. Development at the signal construction companies is now so far advanced that the first pilot track sections are being equipped. ERTMS thus promises to increase rail competitiveness compared to other means of transport as a consequence of improved and more cost-effective services for the rail customer. This will be possible when Trans-European lines and most national main lines are equipped with ERTMS, a system which also cuts investment and maintenance costs. Finding a common path to the current levels of standardisation has not been an easy process. Subsequent work should now proceed more smoothly. The advantages of a uniform European signal system should convince all those responsible for its implementation.
