ARKOS – Automated Identification for Process Optimisation

September 2003 | Martin Peschel

Whether or not goods wagons are running loaded or empty, there are many places within the railway network where clear wagon identification is necessary. This applies, in particular, to marshalling yards, to transfer areas leading into industrial railway facilities and ports, as well as to borders between countries. A goods wagon is clearly identified by its unique wagon number, which is written in several places on the wagon. Identification, however, is often very time-consuming, entails a large number of personnel and is a frequent source of errors. This paper shows how identification can be automated step by step using the ARKOS system. It describes the various technical possibilities available and the different ways in which they can be implemented.
