Februar 2018 | Svenja Hainz, Michael Meyer zu Hörste, Florian Brinkmann

The Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking is a European initiative for railway research and development for the upcoming years. It comprises five Innovation Programs with more than 40 Technical Demonstrators which will be developed in the field of rolling stock, traffic management and control systems, infrastructure, IT solutions and rail freight. In order to complement this development, Cross-Cutting Activities have been defined to deal with Shift2Rail aspects such as its socio-economic effects, economic efficiency, sustainability, standardisation etc. A methodology has been developed to evaluate the technologies and their impact within the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking in order to show the effect which this initiative will have. The key Shift2Rail targets involve doubling the capacity of the railway system, increasing its reliability by 50% and reducing its costs by 50%.
