Dear Readers, we received further positive reports about ERTMS installations in Europe at the beginning of 2018. The EU and the Dutch Infrastructure Ministry intend to release 47 million EUR in the Netherlands in order to equip 300 traction units for goods transport with ERTMS/ETCS technology. GSM-R equipment is also making great strides in Hungary and the 110 km long Sopron-Szombathely-Szentgotthard line will be fitted with Level 2 ETCS. We have a report on the concept for the implementation of the hybrid Level 3 ERTMS, which, despite the discontinuation of a wayside train location device, will lead to increased line capacity due to shorter headway times, reduced costs, improved flexibility and higher reliability in comparison with Level 2 ERTMS....
