ETCS L1 LS and the interoperability of the European rail network
The implementation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) has been underway in Europe for more than 20 years, albeit that the process has been slower than originally anticipated. The system is currently in operation on more than 7,000 km of railway lines in Europe [1, 2], which accounts for just over 3% of the entire European network [3]. Is it possible to find a smart way of simplifying the ETCS system and speeding up its implementation? Could ETCS Level 1 Limited Supervision (L1 LS) be the answer to this challenge...
