Risk analysis of Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD) in ETCS Level 2

March 2019 | Abdelouahab Attou

A conventional network equipped with an interoperable ETCS Level 2 system integrated into the existing lateral (mixed level) signalling is considered. Reducing the risk of passing a signal at danger within tolerable limits, when monitoring train movement through ETCS Level 2 (L2), involves the setting of essential system design parameters such as Release Speed and Maximum Speed in SH and SR modes. Additionally, the choice of these parameters is dependent on other considerations such as driving comfort (ergonomics), any odometry uncertainty and the train’s ability to run at low speeds....
