ALEX: A new generation of level crossings in Sweden

Sweden has a well-developed infrastructure network with 16,500 kilometres of railway lines. However, the technologies that have been used in recent decades are no longer state of the art and as such Trafikverket (TRV), the largest infrastructure administrator in Sweden, launched a project team named ALEX (Automatic Level Crossing System) in 2013 aimed at renewing the network’s level crossings (LC). The tender process for the ALEX project was launched at the end of 2015 after the completion of several study trips throughout Europe and the preparation of the renewal strategy and the detailed tender documentation....
